The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, is tasked with upholding safety standards in automobile manufacturing. To do so, the NHTSA conducts multiple vehicle safety tests and uses a 5-star scale when measuring results.
In the NHTSA’s rating, the 2022 Honda Accord LX trim impressed by scoring five stars in the following categories:
With five stars in each of these categories, and other sub-categories, the Honda Accord received a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating.1
The Institute for Highway Safety is an independent organization that, similar to the NHTSA, researches and ranks vehicles based on a number of safety standards. Depending on the category, these rankings can range from Poor to Good, or Basic to Superior.
In IIHS tests, the Honda Accord passed with flying colors, scoring Good or Superior ratings in all categories in the crashworthiness and crash avoidance and mitigation tests. If you’re bringing a little one along, the Accord LATCH child safety system went above and beyond, scoring a Good+ rating for ease of use.
Due to its high ratings, the 2022 Honda Accord LX trim was chosen as a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, a designation reserved for the best performers.

Now we know that Honda Accord has scored well in a number of safety tests, but just how did it manage those scores? It all begins with a solid foundation: Honda’s ACE™ Body Structure.
ACE™, or Advanced Compatibility Engineering™, is a Honda-exclusive body design that absorbs and deflects energy from a frontal collision. This design helps reduce the force transferred to the cabin, while also more evenly dispersing forces transferred to other vehicles, helping to keep every driver involved safe.
Building on this foundation is several internal passive safety features like Advanced Front Airbags, SmartVent® Front Side Airbags, and Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor. These are paired with active safety features like Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) to help keep your drive as smooth as possible.

Capping off the bevy of safety features in the Accord is the Honda Sensing® suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies. These convenient features take a high-tech approach to keeping your drive safe with features like:
