When to Schedule an Oil Change

Though every Honda model is made a little differently, there are some rules of thumb to go by to keep on top of your oil changes.

If your Honda was produced before 2008, it has probably seen quite a few miles, so schedule an oil change roughly every 3,000 miles to 5,000 miles. If you have a newer Honda, it’s usually recommended to change your oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

Of course, this oil change interval also depends on your exact model, what engine and oil you use under the hood, and your driving habits. Refer to your owner’s manual for your specific maintenance schedule.

Signs You Need an Oil Change

If you’re unsure when your last oil change was, your vehicle will likely let you know when it’s ready for fresh oil. Look for these signs while you’re driving and make an appointment with our Honda service center if they arise:

• Check engine light or oil change light turns on
• Hearing knocking or excess engine noise
• An oil or burning smell inside the cabin
• Your oil is low, dirty, or dark

How to Check Engine Oil

You can also tell when it’s time for an oil change by checking the oil yourself. This process is easy and should be done once a month. Here’s what to do:

1. Open your hood when the engine is turned off and cooled down.
2. Located the oil dipstick located near your engine.
3. Pull it out and wipe it off with a clean, lint-free rag. Then, reinsert it into the pipe.
4. Remove the dipstick once again and inspect the color, consistency, smell, and level of your oil.

Oil should be amber and smooth to the touch. If it is dark, sludgy, has debris in it, or smells burnt, schedule an oil change.
