Introduction to Honda’s Hydrogen Powered Cars

Think fuel cell electric vehicles are a thing of the future? Think again. The 2024 CR-V now comes powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. The model includes two H2 tanks stored in the rear, an intelligent power unit under the seats, and a fuel-cell system and drive unit mounted under the hood.

The Clarity Fuel Cell was Honda’s first contribution to fuel cell powered vehicles. It was discontinued in 2021 due to the introduction of better options through Hondas joint ventures with General Motors Company.

Co-developed by Honda and GM, the new fuel cell system costs roughly ⅓ of the Honda Clarity fuel cell and is now being utilized in the 2024 Honda CR-V. Honda announced a boom in its fuel cell system manufacturing, and will build 2000 units of its next-generation fuel cell system by the year 2025.

The 2024 Honda CR-V e:FCEV, Honda’s first-ever plug-in hydrogen fuel cell powered SUV, has a range of over 265 miles and an EV-only range of close to 25 miles. It packs a respectable 172 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

The new CR-V shows off a more modern exterior design than its gas-powered and hybrid counterparts, with the front grill, bumper, air intakes, and headlamps all receiving upgrades. The interior maintains the same overall layout minus the gear stalk.

Interior features include a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a 9.0-inch HD touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility, wireless phone charging, and a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system.
