2021 Honda Insight vs Toyota Prius

2021 Honda Insight vs Toyota Prius

The Honda Insight and Toyota Prius are two of the most popular hybrid models on the market. With more drivers in the San Antonio, Schertz, and Alamo Heights, Texas, area turning to a greener way of commuting, you too may be wondering which is the better choice for you.

At Northside Honda, we’re here to help with our 2021 Honda Insight vs. Toyota Prius comparison. Though both hybrids are sure to have you visiting the gas station less, this article will help you decide which has the performance and space that appeals to you the most.

2021 Insight vs 2021 Prius: Performance

As hybrids, it should be no surprise that both the Insight and Prius offer incredible MPG ratings. Both models offer a city MPG of over 55, for example, with the Honda Insight achieving an EPA-estimated 55 city/49 highway/52 combined MPG.1 However, when it comes to the power generated under the hood, there are some differences.

The Honda Insight is powered by the 1.5L 4-cylinder engine paired with an AC Synchronous Permanent-Magnet Electric Motor and Lithium ION battery. When running on just the engine, you’ll receive a horsepower of 107. However, add that to the 129 horsepower of the electric motor, and you’ll have a total system net horsepower of 151, highly respectable for any compact model.

The Toyota Prius is equipped with a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine but is also paired with a permanent magnet AC synchronous motor. However, the engine’s horsepower maxes out at only 96, while the motor also achieves less with 71. This results in a total system horsepower of 121—quite less than the 2021 Insight.

The Insight doesn’t end its impressiveness there, either. Though both models’ engines are melded to an Electric Continuously Variable Transmission, only the Insight offers a special Sport mode, so you can really amp things up on the road.

2021 Honda Insight Interior

Honda Insight vs Toyota Prius: Interior Space

For compact vehicles, these hybrids supply a decent amount of space for you and your passengers. Both can seat up to five inside, with each seat offering plenty of room to cozy up in for the ride ahead.

Though, when it comes to passenger volume, the 2021 Honda Insight heads the pack again. It offers a spacious 97.6 cubic feet of passenger volume, while the 2021 Toyota Prius only supplies 93.1 cubic feet.

While those in both models will have plenty of space up front, those in the back seat of the Prius may feel a little cramped. With less room for legs and shoulders, your travel companions might be fighting for the front seat more often than you think.
